Visiting Open House London with kids is an experience we have cherished for years, and we wholeheartedly endorse it for fellow families. It not only comes at no cost but also offers a rare opportunity to delve into distinctive buildings, far removed from the usual tourist haunts.

This annual extravaganza unfolds from the 6th to the 17th of September, providing an exclusive peek into the architectural and historical wonders that grace our city. From venerable halls and palaces to cutting-edge skyscrapers and factories, you’ll have the chance to uncover both iconic landmarks and hidden gems.

Exploring the Master Shipwrights House in Deptford (a filming location for Luther among others) has been a long-standing favourite of ours, but regrettably, it won’t be gracing the Open House list for 2023.

Many of the venues that require advance ticket bookings have already been fully reserved. If you’re a busy family like ours, chances are you haven’t pre-booked activities either 😉 That’s precisely why we’ve curated a list featuring attractions that don’t require any prior reservations. These experiences operate on a first-come, first-served basis. And, in true London fashion, the golden rule remains: arrive early to make the most of your day!

Here are some of the best buildings to visit during Open House London 2023 with kids who love to learn and discover new things.

1. Thames River Police, Wapping

Dates: Sat 16-17 September, 11:00-17:00, No booking required

This is the oldest police station in the world, dating back to 1798. It was established by Patrick Colquhoun to combat theft and smuggling on the River Thames. You can see the original cells, boats and equipment used by the river police, and hear stories about their daring raids and arrests.

Your kids will be thrilled by the adventure and danger of the river police work, and see how they protect people and property on the water. A truly unique museum off the beaten path, and one of the most family-friendly open house buildings on our list!
