Planning to see London’s protective barrier system? The Thames Barrier Park offers stunning views of this miracle piece of engineering in East London. The park is located on the north bank of the Thames, in the Silvertown area of London’s Docklands. Very different from London’s many classic parks, the Thames Barrier Park is of contemporary design built in 1995 with a postmodern aesthetic.
The Thames Barrier is an awesome piece of engineering built in 1982 to prevent The Thames from the very real risk of a catastrophic major flood. The park is located over 22 acres, with the chance for London tourists to escape the East London urban metropolis and witness the relaxing sea of green created by the beautiful trees, lawns plus Yew and Maygreen hedges.
Things to do for families at Thames Barrier Park
- Check out the cool structures of the Thames Barrier that prevent London from flooding
- Go plane spotting and watch flights taking off and landing at London City Airport nearby
- Check out the sunken ornate garden landscaped as waves on the river
- The park has a playground which is well maintained with modern equipment (best for young kids)
- Go for a picnic on the lawn and watch the boats on the river
- Take a break while cycling along the Thames path
The park is one of the most popular East London attractions in summer, with the fountain plaza where 32 jets provide kids (and adults!) the chance to cool down and splash around. The Thames Barrier Park also has excellent sporting facilities and is ideal for spring and summer picnics.
The Best View of the Thames Barrier Closing
You don’t need to wait for the next flood to happen to watch the Thames Barrier close. You’re actually able to see the barrier operate every month on a fixed date when it’s tested. You’ll get a time-frame of 2-3 hours, so bring a picnic blanket and enjoy the scenery while you wait for the barrier to rise. Note that you’ll not be able to walk out on the barrier itself and that the Thames Barrier information centre is located on the south side of the river in Woolwich.
