If you love cycling in London, you’ll be thrilled to hear that a huge new cycle highway has just opened in southeast London. It’s called Cycleway 4 and connects London Bridge with Greenwich, giving you a safe and scenic way to explore the city on your bike.

Cycleway 4 is part of the ambitious plan to make London more cycle-friendly. Since 2016, the capital’s network of protected bike routes has grown from 90km to 360km. That’s a fourfold increase in just eight years! Check our guide to family cycle routes in London for inspiration.

Advice from a local family: If cycling with young children between Greenwich and London Bridge, you might want to consider our recommended Thames Path instead of Cycleway 4. The Thames Path is a quieter, more relaxing route along the river. It is also safer for children as there is less traffic and fewer junctions. You can still enjoy the beautiful views of London and reach Greenwich from Rotherhithe or Bermondsey.

Cycleway 4 is especially great for families who live in southeast London, as it makes it easier for them to go cycling into the city from areas such as Greenwich, Rotherhithe and Bermondsey. The new section on Lower Road has 1.3km of two-way lanes that join up with the existing sections on Jamaica Road and Evelyn Street.
